We have the technology...

Okay, so I'm an idiot, because I was trying to work out why #7 wasn't marked on the tracking log, when I'm only just getting up to wikis now in Week 7...then I realised it was TASK #7 I hadn't done. So now this will be all out of order. Way to be out of sync, Em! ;-)

So I have to talk about technology. Where do I start? I mean, seriously - I cannot fathom not having access to all that we have of that ilk in the present. A few years back, I had 3 hard drives go cactus within the space of a year. By the time the third one happened, I seriously became catatonic. I was THAT upset. And anyone who knows me, knows that I don't DO catatonic...not even REMOTELY. But that just spoke to me of how important a place in my life just a computer in itself is. In order to keep up with my emails, etc, I got into work early every day to jump on a PC there and check to make sure I hadn't missed anything crucial. Because heaven forbid something happen and *I* not be privy to it! ;-) But that's what my life is like now.

It's funny, because when it comes to technology, I don't desperately need to have the newest, the biggest, or the best new thing. Hell, I only got an Ipod last year...and I LIVE for music. As long as I have what I need to do what I want to do, I'm happy. But if I don't...batten down the hatches, kids. A storm'll be rolling in any time now. ;-)

When I was a kid, I had virtually no friends, so I read a lot. I never used to sleep much either, so as a result, I spent a lot of time just reading - and one of my favourite books was the dictionary. I read the whole Macquarie from cover to cover. As you do. Hasn't done my vocabulary any harm, mind you - but it's amazing to think that these days, if I need to check a word or something? Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to Dictionary.com we go. Or insert website of choice. By virtue of the fact that we have all this literally at our fingertips (sadly, even with a dictionary within arm's reach, I've gone the Web route. It shames me to admit it, but it's true! :-S), I think we've come to rely on technology to a point where - as I have realised by my own actions - if we lose it, we're flummoxed. I'm completely guilty of it myself - but I think it's a sad indictment of contemporary society.

Would I have it any other way? NO way. I don't want to go back. I just think there's so much potential in technology, in so many ways. I'm excited about what the future holds. I just never want to see the day where we don't have a fallback position for times when computers don't work, or power fails. As is so often the case - it's great when it works. When it doesn't? To quote Captain Jack Harkness? You gotta be ready...
